Funding call: Green hydrogen cooperation with New Zealand

Germany and New Zealand intend to use climate-friendly technologies to make progress with the energy transition and have identified green hydrogen as the key to decarbonizing society. Both countries are already among the pioneers in research on green hydrogen.

The German Federal Research Ministry will support cooperation with partners in New Zealand in order to further develop the technology’s potential.

For this purpose, the Ministry has issued a specific funding call for green hydrogen research cooperation with New Zealand based on the announcement of funding regulations. The focus is on projects in both basic and applied research.

Innovation networks and research partnerships

In addition to funding selected research projects, the call also aims to prepare the ground for international knowledge and innovation networks that produce research, development and innovation partnerships with a clear added value for both partner countries.

Funding Germany-New Zealand hydrogen partnerships as international pilot research projects will also enable industry to participate.

Thematic priorities of the funding

Under this call, funding will be provided for individual and collaborative research projects which involve international cooperation with partners from New Zealand and address one or more of the following topics:

  • Production of green hydrogen by means of electrolysis, photocatalysis, biomass gasification or fermentation as well as thermochemical splitting using high-temperature solar collectors
  • Research on green hydrogen system integration and sector coupling, including hydrogen use in cities and districts and in the heating sector as well as H2 integration into the gas grid
  • Supply and transport media including life-cycle analysis, storage and conversion pathways (e.g. liquid organic hydrogen carriers, ammonia and other options)
  • (Material) innovations for fuel cell technologies and electrolysis, increasing efficiency and lifetime

Amount and duration of possible funding

Funding will be awarded as non-repayable project grants. On the German side, a maximum amount of €400,000 will be provided per collaborative project for a period of up to 36 months.

The deadline for application is 4th June 2021.

Interested researchers can submit project outlines in digital form by 4th June 2021 at the latest (first phase of the procedure).
