State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research

Dr. Roland Philippi has been State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) since July 2024.

Dr. Philippi has many years of experience in administration at the Federal and Land level and wide-ranging expertise in educational, scientific and research policy. After completing his studies in political science, he earned an in-service doctorate degree from Goethe University Frankfurt. Posts in his subsequent career first included leadership positions at the Hessian Ministry of Justice, for Integration and Europe and the Hessian Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs. From 2018 to 2021, he served as divisional manager in the FDP parliamentary group in the German Bundestag, responsible for education and research among others. Next, and until July 2024, Dr. Philippi worked as Head of Directorate-General “Policy Issues and Strategies; Coordination” at the BMBF. As Director-General, he played a major role in the development of the Future Research and Innovation Strategy and in the design of the German Agency for Transfer and Innovation (DATI).

Dr. Roland Philippi was born on 8 January 1982 in Bonn, Germany. He is married with two children.
