AEVO

Training

Training instructors need teaching skills in addition to knowledge in their field. The Instructor Aptitude Regulations (Ausbilder-Eignungsverordnung, AEVO) specify what this means. The AEVO provides guidance for the training of instructors and secures the quality of vocational training.

Opportunities

  • Upon successful completion of instructor training (Ausbildung der Ausbilder, AdA), candidates are awarded national training qualifications, the AdA certificate, opening up good career prospects for young people.
  • For instructors, the AEVO offers a clear structure and assistance in the provision of training for young people, which also supports instructors’ own professional development.
  • For trainees, the AEVO ensures reliable, high-quality training. Qualified instructors not only teach them specialist knowledge but also help them to develop important skills for their everyday work.
  • For the business sector, the AEVO produces well-trained staff that can enter the labour market directly and contribute to innovative strength and competitiveness.

The AEVO benefits vocational training

The Instructor Aptitude Regulations provide for qualified instructors who are able to train skilled workers in recognized training occupations in accordance with the Vocational Training Act (Berufsbildungsgesetz, BBiG). These regulations play a vital role in our education sector and serve to secure the quality of vocational training.

What is the AEVO?

The AEVO defines the job-related skills which instructors need to have in order to provide training. Instructors must be able to plan, implement and supervise the following four steps of vocational training independently:

  1. Verification of training prerequisites and planning of training programme
  2. Preparation of training and cooperation in the recruitment of trainees
  3. Implementation of training programme
  4. Conclusion of training

The examination administered under the AEVO

The instructor aptitude examination establishes whether candidates possess these skills. The examination is mandatory for instructors who provide training in recognized training occupations; this does not apply to training in the area of the liberal professions (lawyers, doctors, architects, tax consultants, etc.). Instructors in the skilled trades need to have passed the Meister examination in the trade for which they are to provide training.

The instructor aptitude examination is administered by the competent bodies. “AdA” (Ausbildung der Ausbilder) courses teach the relevant knowledge needed to take the examination. The Board of the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training has published a framework plan for these courses. It contains information about what needs to be taught in these courses. In this way, the framework plan ensures a national standard for the quality of AdA courses.

Why is the AEVO important?

The AEVO ensures that instructors have teaching skills in addition to a sound knowledge of their field. This has many advantages:

  • High-quality training: well-trained instructors provide for high quality of training. This improves the job prospects for trainees.
  • Uniform standards: as a result of the AEVO, uniform standards apply throughout Germany. This builds trust in the vocational training system and strengthens Germany’s position as a business location.
  • Security and reliability: trainees and their parents can be sure of the high level of training.
  1. Professionalism of training instructors
  2. High-quality training
  3. Qualified workers
  4. Competitive business sector
